Melon Madness !

By Jane Day    Date released:  27th June 2014
The first recorded watermelon harvest occurred nearly 5,000 years ago in Egypt. From there, the fruit spread throughout countries along the Mediterranean Sea by way of merchant ships, before reaching China - which is now the world's number one producer of watermelons - by the 10th century. *

According to Guinness World Records, the world's heaviest watermelon was grown by Lloyd Bright of Arkadelphia, Arkansas in 2005, weighing in at a whopping 268.8 lbs !

At Booker Wholesale, we can't quite offer you a watermelon of this size. However, we are currently running a really great deal, at only £2.50 each.

The independent retailer can cut the melon into 6-8 slices, and sell for £1.50 a slice, guaranteeing a great POR on this line.

For the caterer, there are lots of possibilities to use this versatile fruit as an ingredient in a recipe. A refreshing tomato, watermelon and feta salad makes the perfect starter, whilst a Pork Burger with a side of Minted Watermelon and Cucumber is a great, light lunch choice. It is also a very colourful addition to any fruit salad, mixed with summer berries and some slices of kiwi, as well as being a great thirst quencher if made into watermelon and strawberry lemonade.

Some great recipe ideas can be found here :- And at 92% water, a watermelon is perfect to help keep you hydrated on a warm day, so stock up now !
