Eco Friendly Options at Booker Branches

The environment is often in the news, but it can feel like there's not much we can do that will make a difference.

The truth is, there are lots of small, easy steps you can take to make your business more environmentally friendly. It's really simple to get started

Re-think your Packaging

At Booker we sell a brilliant range of fully biodegradable, compostable packaging.

The 'Compost Me' range will breakdown naturally in landfill, meaning less litter and pollution. It's ideal for use at festivals and other summer events, but it's also winning favour amongst many café and takeaway owners shopping at Booker.

It includes recycled napkins, wooden knives, forks and spoons (made from sustainable beech wood), compostable burger boxes, meal boxes, fish and chip boxes and chip trays.

Did you know we also sell compostable pint and half pint 'glasses', which are made from plant starch, but look just like clear plastic? Clever!

If you use the range, make sure you advertise that fact, as it may result in higher sales from eco-conscious customers.

Manic Organic

Organic food is produced without the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilisers. Organic farmer will often use more traditional methods, such as crop rotation to keep soils fertile, and introducing specific predators to reduce pests.

For a food to be labelled organic, at least 95% of it's ingredients must come from organically produced plants and animals.

We've got some delicious organic catering supplies on sale right now, including Westons Wyld wood Organic Cider and Pear Cider, Fuller's Honey Dew Refreshing Golden Organic Beer, and a wonderful organic Malbec.

And if you haven't tried Green & Black's Fairtrade Organic Chocolate, you're definitely missing out!

Get Recycling

Our customer recycling scheme, launched in April 2012, allows you to recycle their cardboard and shrinkwrap free of charge.

All you have to do is sign up for the scheme, and then drop your recycling materials off at your local wholesale branch.

Next, we send the cardboard and shrinkwrap to our recycling centres using empty lorries that have just delivered food to our branches. This means that transporting the waste is 'zero carbon'- genius!

This is great news if you want to:

. Avoid separate trips to the recycling centre.
. Save money on commercial waste disposal services (up to £1400 a year).
. Drop recycling off at Booker each time you visit to shop, creating more space in your stock room.

We hope this has shown you how easy and beneficial it can be to make your business more eco-friendly. If you have other ideas for reducing a catering or retail business's impact on the environment, let us know on our Facebook page.
